Get ahead on college and life by earning an associates degree or a certificate for FREE.

How does it work?

Through the Early Middle College (EMC) Program, you will earn a college degree and or career certificate.  The EMC is structured so that you gradually increase your exposure to college courses over a five-year span. You take college classes during 11th and 12th grades along with your high school classes, and then attend college full time during the fifth year of high school to complete the program.

What are the Benefits of Early Middle College?

  1. You can earn a career certificate or an Associate's Degree while still in high school. This will help you advance through your educational path and start your career years earlier than a traditional educational program.
  2. If a four-year college is in your future, you will have a smooth transition.  Both Lake Michigan College and Southwestern Michigan College participate in the state-wide Michigan Transfer Agreement and has individual transfer agreements with universities throughout Michigan and Indiana.
  3. You will be able to save money as you pursue a college degree through an additional year of high school used to complete your college program.

Where do I take my college classes?

You will take your college courses on the campuses of Lake Michigan College or Southwestern Michigan College.

Will I have support?

Yes, you will! Support systems like the Summer College Life Studies course, Early/Middle College seminars, plus all the regular advising, tutoring, and library services from your high school, LMC and SMC will support your success.

Students who are interested in enrolling in the Cassopolis 5th Year Early/ Middle College commit to:

  • Successful completion of college coursework in their junior and senior years of high school, as well as the 5th year of high school.
  • Extend their high school graduation date by one school year. Students will, however, participate in high school commencement with their original graduating class.
  • The completion of an associate's degree or career certificate.
